OpenAI retires its consumer browser agents

Atlas stopped working on 9 August. ChatGPT agent was withdrawn in the same window. The capability did not disappear — it moved.

OpenAI shut down Atlas, the browser it launched in October 2025, after roughly nine months. The standalone browser was scheduled to stop working on 9 August 2026. In the same window ChatGPT Agent was withdrawn: its help centre article now opens with a notice that ChatGPT agent is no longer available, directing users to ChatGPT Work for longer multi-step tasks and to the cloud browser for browser workflows.

The capability was redistributed rather than dropped. Browser-based agentic work moved into ChatGPT and Codex: a Chrome extension, a more capable browser in the ChatGPT desktop app — multiple tabs, downloads, account login — and a cloud browser running on OpenAI's servers for autonomous tasks.

Two practical consequences. First, the replacement is not like-for-like: Work returns finished documents, and it is the cloud browser, not Work, that drives a logged-in session. If your workflow depended on signing into a site, test the cloud browser rather than assuming Work covers it. Second, Operator's lineage now ends twice over — Operator was folded into ChatGPT Agent, and ChatGPT Agent has itself been retired.

OpenAI's developer-facing Computer use tool tool is unaffected and remains GA.
