ChatGPT Agent

Retired. Agent mode inside ChatGPT, withdrawn in August 2026; OpenAI now points users at ChatGPT Work for multi-step tasks and at the cloud browser for browser workflows.

OpenAI's consumer-facing agent, built into ChatGPT rather than sold as an API. It worked inside a hosted virtual browser with an associated terminal. OpenAI withdrew it in August 2026: its help centre article now opens with a notice that ChatGPT agent is no longer available, directing users to ChatGPT Work for longer multi-step tasks and to the cloud browser for browser workflows. The replacement is not like-for-like — Work produces finished documents rather than handing you a live browser session.

Best for

Historical reference. For the same job today, use ChatGPT Work, the cloud browser, or OpenAI's computer use tool in the API.

Watch out

Withdrawn. The help centre article still carries the original how-to text below the retirement notice, which reads as though the feature is live. It is not. Re-checked on 8 October 2026 and still gone; the one capability reporting says went with it, and did not reappear elsewhere, is handing control back mid-task and having the agent carry on afterwards.
