Working across apps that do not talk to each other

A spreadsheet, a PDF in another program, a draft in a third. No API exists between them and none is coming.

What happens

  1. Open the spreadsheet and read out the relevant figures
  2. Switch to the PDF held in a different application and find the comparison values
  3. Reconcile the two and note the discrepancies
  4. Open a third application and draft a summary
  5. Leave the draft for review rather than sending it

This is the local-machine case and the clearest argument for the whole category. Three programs, no integration between them, and no prospect of one. It is precisely what Perplexity documents for Personal Computer — comparing files held in different applications, pulling notes from one app to draft in another.

Where it breaks

It is operating on your real files. A browser tab can be closed and reopened; a document saved over cannot. There is no undo at the desktop level, which is why the sandbox question matters more here than anywhere else on this list.
